In an age that's dominated by distraction and instantaneous stimulation, focusing for long periods of time has never been more difficult. One of the top issues clients tell me they struggle with is focusing: especially on tasks they don't enjoy. And I can relate. I've certainly had my share of struggles with focus. Especially knowing that entertainment and socialization is literally in my pocket. Thankfully, focus isn't only about willpower, it's also a skill we can build. And by making a few changes, we can help make focusing easier. Here's a few things that've been helpful for me.

I. Put the phone in another room.
Have it somewhere you can't see it, hear it... And hopefully forget about it. A single buzz is at it takes to pull me right out of the zone. And when focus is as precious as it is, we need to isolate ourself from our absolute favorite distraction.
II. Set social boundaries around focus.
As someone that often has a lot of people nearby, physically and digitally (clients, coworkers, family, roommates), it helps for me to make my intentions known to people that might disrupt my headspace. If for you this is family that you're living with, let them know that for the next few hours, you're going to be working on something. And if they need you, they should wait so that you can stay focused. "Do Not Disturb" mode has become my best friend since talking to people is usually just way more enticing!
III. Create an environment that fosters focus.
This can look a lot of different ways person to person. For some, a coffee shop environment is an excellent balance of stimulation, social accountability, and comfort for focus. For me, I do some of my best work in complete isolation. I do, however, often enjoy adding some soft, repetitive focus music into my space. With a little flavor of nature sounds. One of my favorites can be found on my YouTube channel and is posted below:
